James Gordaneer Biography
(1933 - 2016)
Born in Toronto, Ontario, he began serious painting at the age of 19 and took instruction at the Doon School of Fine Arts during the summers of 1953-4. During the winter months he worked in the grocery business and in the evenings attended the Artist's Workshop in Toronto as well as classes at the Ontario College of Art in 1954-5.
Mostly self taught however, he has been influenced by the work of Jack Bechtel, Yvonne Housser, John Martin, J.W.G. Macdonald, the New York School of artists (Gorky, Kline, DeKooning, etc.) also by the work of Goya and Byzantine artists. He painted realistic subjects then moved into abstract work and more recently non-figurative. His solo exhibits were held at the Upstairs Gallery, Toronto and the Penthouse Gallery, Montreal.
A member of the Ontario Society of Artists (1961), the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (1962) he has exhibited with them. He had also exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy, the Fourth Biennial Exhibition of Canadian Art (1961), Montreal Spring Show, Hamilton Winter Show, Art League and group shows at the Isaacs Gallery, Toronto. He has taught painting at the Central Technical School, Toronto, the School of Architecture at the University of Toronto, the Doon School of Fine Arts and at other workshops. He had travelled in Mexico, France, Spain and Greece. Gordaneer is represented in the collections of the Sarnia Public Library, and the Sir George Williams University in Montreal.
